Student Employment Information

In order to be considered for on-campus student employment, students must apply online and meet certain eligibility guidelines outlined in the following accordion menu.

Student Employment Requirements


• ALL student employees must maintain satisfactory academic progress of an overall 2.0 GPA or better with Collin College.  Some positions may require a higher GPA.

FALL & SPRING:
• Student employees, including Work Study (WS) and CougarWorks Interns, must remain enrolled in at least 6 credit hours during the semester in Fall and Spring semesters.

 

Exception: Student employees and Interns (non-WS) in their graduating or last semester with Collin College may be eligible if they need less than 6 credits to graduate.


• Work Study students must remain enrolled in at least 6 credit hours. Exceptions to the 6 credit hour minimum are not allowed for WS students, including Federal Work Study, Texas Work Study, and Veteran Work Study.


• International students must remain enrolled in 12 hours, unless it is the student's graduating semester and/or approval is obtained from the International Student Office.


• All student employees enrolled in less than 6 credit hours (based on the exceptions above) will be subject to Medicare and a part-time employment retirement plan.


• The enrollment status for student workers will be monitored throughout the semester to ensure continued eligibility for employment.


SUMMER:
Returning student employees who worked during Spring semester are allowed to continue to work in Maymester and/or through June 30th without enrolling in 6 credit hours. However, you will be taxed accordingly.  In order to be eligible to continue working in the Fall, you must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours at Collin College by July 1st.


Returning work study students who worked during Spring semester are allowed to continue to work in Maymester and/or through June 30th by being enrolled in 1 credit hour. However, you will be taxed accordingly.  In order to be eligible to continue working in the Fall, you must again be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours at Collin College by July 1st. If not enrolled, your supervisor must change your status to Non-Work Study.


All New student employees must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours during the Summer to be eligible for a Summer employment. After July 1st, you must be enrolled in the upcoming Fall semester.


• Acceptable combinations of 6 Summer hours include:

6 hours in Summer III, or
3 hours in Maymester AND 3 hours during any of the Summer semesters, or
6 hours in Summer I or Summer II, or
3 hours in Summer III, plus 3 hours in either Summer I or Summer II  


• Work Study (WS) students are paid through a financial aid award.  Students must apply and qualify for WS in order to be eligible for WS employment.


• Before a WS job offer may be extended, final WS award authorization from the Financial Aid office is required. 

 

• WS students are awarded a specific amount of funds and they are eligible to earn those funds through WS employment.


• WS employment ends when the amount awarded for the semester has been earned.  Supervisors and students are responsible for closely monitoring hours worked and the remaining award amount. Hours worked beyond the award amount will be paid out of the supervisor's departmental budget.


• Students who have been awarded WS through the Financial Aid Office may apply online for any WS or student employee positions.

• All students with Collin including International Students and Work Study can qualify for an Intern position.


• Intern students will be assigned a mentor in the Collin College department who will help facilitate skills, knowledge, and abilities development.


• Same rules and regulations must be met in regard to Work Study and International Students.


• Must remain enrolled in 6 or more hours, unless it is the student's graduating semester and/or approval is obtained.
